This is where most people get stuck.
And usually, it’s not because it’s complicated—it’s just how it’s explained.
When you start looking into sergers, the terminology comes at you fast. Overlocker. Coverstitch. Combo machine. And suddenly a decision that seemed straightforward feels a lot more complicated than it should.
It's actually much simpler than it looks. Instead of focusing on the machines themselves, think about what you want to do. That single question makes everything else fall into place.
The Overlocker — where most people start

An overlocker trims the edge of your fabric, stitches the seam, and finishes it all at the same time. One pass, clean result.
This is what most people picture when they hear the word "serger" — and for good reason. If you want cleaner edges, less fraying, and fewer steps, this is where most people land. For quilters especially, it solves the most immediate problems right away.
If you've been watching our demo videos this month, you've already seen an overlocker in action.
The Coverstitch — more specialized

A coverstitch machine does one thing: flat, professional hems and topstitching. That stretchy stitch you see on the hem of T-shirts and knit garments? That's a coverstitch.
It’s a great option if you sew a lot of garments and want that clean, finished look on knits and stretch fabrics. For most quilters it's not the starting point — but if you do a lot of garment work, it's worth knowing it exists.
The Combo — flexibility in one machine

A combo machine does both. Overlock and coverstitch, in one machine.
For a long time combo machines had a reputation for being complicated to switch between functions.
That’s changed.
The newer machines are much more straightforward to set up, and switching between functions is a lot simpler than it used to be.
So what used to feel like a tradeoff… doesn’t really feel like one anymore.
If you want room to grow, or you sew both quilts and garments, a combo starts to make a lot of sense.
So what do most quilters actually need?
The overlocker handles the majority of what quilters are looking for — cleaner seams, faster finishing, better results.
But a lot of people end up leaning toward a combo once they see what it can do.
It really comes down to whether you want something simple… or something with more flexibility built in.
The combo is worth a conversation if your budget allows and you want the flexibility to do more over time. A lot of our customers land there once they see what it can do.
The coverstitch-only machine is usually a later conversation — something you add once you already know you need it.
Not sure which one fits you?
That's completely normal — and honestly, it's usually easier to figure out in person than on a screen. Come in, tell us how you sew, and we'll point you in the right direction. Most of the time it clicks pretty quickly once you see the machines in action.
April is National Serger Month, so it’s a great time to explore.
There are some really good opportunities right now—special pricing on machines, 20% off accessories, and financing options coming up mid-month.
