We’re thrilled to announce something brand new (and highly requested!) here at BERNINA Lafayette — the Making Bags Book Club, taught by none other than Jackie Sinclair!

If you’ve been to Embroidery Sewciety or Quilter’s Sewcial Club, you’ve already seen Jackie’s incredible talent for creating professional, stylish bags. Now, for the first time, she’s bringing her expertise to the classroom so you can learn directly from her.

This multi-month program is designed to take you step-by-step through the art of bag making using Sallie Tomato’s Making Bags: A Field Guide. With Jackie’s guidance, you’ll build confidence, sharpen your sewing skills, and finish the series with a collection of gorgeous handmade bags you’ll be proud to carry.

📅 Class Schedule

• Month 1 (Lecture): Sat. Oct. 18th

• Month 2: Sat. Nov. 1st

• Month 3: Sat. Dec. 6th

• Month 4: Sat. Jan. 3rd

• Month 5: Sat. Feb. 7th

• Month 6: Sat. Mar. 7th

(Makeup days will be available if you have to miss one of the scheduled sessions.)

💲 Pricing

• Registration Fee: $120 (covers the Month 1 lecture + your essential toolkit + the book)

• Each Additional Class (Months 2–6): $100 per class (paid monthly)

🎁 What’s Included Each Month

Every class comes with a boxed kit that includes:

• All the fabric, faux leather, interfacing, and hardware needed for that month’s bag

• The project pattern and instructions

• Jackie’s expert, step-by-step guidance

👉 All you’ll need to bring is your sewing machine (with basic supplies) and thread. We’ll take care of the rest!

👜 The Projects

Month 1: Introduction to Bag Making

Kick things off with an inspiring lecture-style session where you’ll receive your copy of Making Bags: A Field Guide and the essential tools you’ll use throughout the program. Jackie will share her journey into bag making, highlight her favorite tips, and set the stage for your adventure. With your toolkit in hand, you’ll be ready to dive into your first project in just two weeks.

Month 2: Quilted Zipper Pouch

A modern spin on a timeless favorite! This stylish pouch pairs soft faux leather with clean, minimalist quilting for a fresh, contemporary look. You’ll learn fabric prep, zipper installation, bag assembly, and even ways to customize with embellishments.

Month 3: Fold-Over Crossbody

Trendy, practical, and oh-so-versatile. The fold-over crossbody features a sleek silhouette with contrasting accents that give it a boutique look. With plenty of space inside and a removable, adjustable strap, this project reinforces zipper and construction skills while introducing new techniques.

Month 4: Everyday Tote

Your new go-to carryall! This roomy tote has boxed corners for extra depth and handy pockets to keep everything organized. Perfect for work, light travel, or everyday use — while giving you more experience with cutting, assembly, and pocket design.

Month 5: Classic Hobo Bag

Casual elegance at its best. This slouchy hobo bag blends relaxed style with clean lines for a look that pairs effortlessly with anything. You’ll refine your bag-making skills while creating a timeless, versatile piece you’ll use again and again.

Month 6: Statement Handbag

Finish strong with a showstopper! This sophisticated handbag pulls together everything you’ve learned in the series. Side pockets keep essentials within reach, while the spacious zippered interior offers plenty of room for the rest. A true “wow” bag that proves how far you’ve come!

By registering, you are signing up for the full six-month Book Club series. Your $120 registration fee covers Month 1, and each additional class (Months 2–6) will be $100, billed monthly as we go along.
